New coffee shop will enhance west lobby
People entering the Visitor Entrance (Door #4) to Avera St. Luke’s Hospital on the west side of the facility can expect to see construction in process for the next 90 days.
“We are beginning an exciting remodel of our west lobby,” said KC DeBoer, vice president of the Hospital Division at Avera St. Luke’s. “The changes will not only update our overall appearance, but will now feature a new service of a coffee shop on our premises.”
The hospital has partnered with MUGS-The Coffee House of Aberdeen to build a specialty coffee bar in the hospital’s west lobby.

Enjoy ice cream and tunes at municipal band concert
Come enjoy cool treats at a free summer ice cream social hosted by Avera St. Luke’s PrestigePLUS, then listen to the Aberdeen Municipal Band concert featuring soloists and Aberdeen siblings Patty Kirkpatrick and Bob Kiesz. They’ll entertain with tunes such as “Come Fly With Me” and “Cry Me a River” on Thursday, July 22, at Melgaard Park.
The ice cream social starts at 7:30 p.m., and everyone coming to the concert is invited. The music begins at 8 p.m., featuring big band songs of the ‘30s, ‘40s, and ‘50s, as well as some newer tunes.

One Pace Beyond winners chosen
Nine people have been honored with 2010 One Pace Beyond awards from Avera St. Luke’s. These awards recognize employees who exemplify the health care organization’s values of compassion, hospitality and stewardship in an extraordinary way. Winners will be entered in the Avera Caring Spirit Award competition, a systemwide event for Avera employees.

Asthma can be kept under control
May is Asthma Awareness Month, and respiratory therapists in the Aberdeen area believe it’s a great time for people with asthma to get more informed about the condition and how to keep it under control. The American Association for Respiratory Care (AARC) has joined international health organizations in supporting 2010 as the Year of the Lung.

Celebrate spirit of nursing during special week
Nurses touch so many lives. When you think back on your life to times when you were at your most vulnerable, chances are there is a nurse in your memory that helped you heal, overcome and persevere. Nursing education and licensure insures that nurses have the clinical skills needed to be competent. The spirit and caring you receive from nursing comes from the heart.
National Nurses Week is celebrated annually from May 6-12, ending on the birthday of Florence Nightingale, the founder of modern nursing. This week focuses on highlighting the diverse ways in which nurses are working to improve health care.

Visualize the complex workings of the human heart – and the diseases that threaten it – with the interactive MEGA Heart™, a heart experience you can’t miss! This free, unique display, sponsored by Avera St. Luke’s Hospital, is coming to Aberdeen’s Lakewood Mall from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday, April 27. Schoolchildren will be touring the MEGA Heart from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., and the public is invited to come from 3 to 8 p.m.
