Sleep Lab at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital

Due to construction, a series of moves are taking place at Avera St. Luke’s Hospital. The sleeping rooms for the Sleep Lab are currently relocated to Third Floor North. Although participants will need to pass through the Pediatrics Unit to go to the Sleep Lab right now, this situation will not be permanent.

However, the sleeping rooms still maintain the feel of a home bedroom with a regular bed and bedding, soft lights, TV, private bathroom, etc.

Want to find out more? Sleep Lab could make dreams come true

Sleepless nights can go away, with the right help

For people who dream of getting a good night’s sleep and just can’t seem to find ways to do it, there is help. More than 40 million Americans are affected by sleep disorders. Using the most current technology available, nearly 400 sleep studies are done in Avera St. Luke’s Sleep Lab each year, helping patients throughout the region find out why they struggle to sleep

By spending a night in the “sleep labs,” 16 different body functions can be monitored by Avera St. Luke’s Registered Polysomnographic Technologists. A polysomnogram is the test that records a patient’s physical state during various stages of sleep and wakefulness and provides data essential in evaluating sleep and sleep-related complaints. After a patient gets “wired up,” technologists monitor and videotape sleep time.

After a pulmonologist interprets results, the patient, physician and health care professionals can work toward a solution. The problem might be snoring, insomnia, or the most frequent, sleep apnea.

If it’s diagnosed as sleep apnea, continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) is a common treatment, where a device sends a steady stream of air blowing gently into the back of the throat to keep the airway open during sleep. “The increased awareness of the benefit that CPAP may have on your health is growing,” said Rachel Haigh -Blume, director of Avera St. Luke’s Sleep Lab. “For example, it has been shown to improve some individual’s cardiovascular health, as well as some respiratory conditions other than sleep apnea.”

Each “bedroom” in the Sleep Lab features a real bed, bedspread and sheets, a TV, gentle lighting from wall sconces, and private bathrooms with a shower, so you'll feel right at home.

You'll need to check in by 8 p.m. After a good night's sleep, you can be up and off to work or home the next morning. A doctor’s order is needed before you make the appointment. For more information, call (605) 622-5357.
